Took me a while to get this reviewed. But that’s what you get when you’re too busy reading Batman comics. Sorry Daan!
# Hardcore (hashtag hardcore) looks like it came out in 2004/2005. And that’s meant as a compliment. The love for hardcore (and zines!) oozes out of every page (40 in total). The lay-out is total cut & paste worship. I’m not a purist at all, but a hardcore zine just looks a lot better with a good cut & paste layout. Fact.
There’s interviews with State Of Mind (pick up one of those 495 CD’s they have left people, great band!), Rise And Fall (interesting track by track “Faith” interview), In Effect, Murphy’s Law and No Tolerance. Interviews done right, so not the ’7 questions, 1 line replies’ routine.
Aside from that there are colums (‘What’s up with Black Flag shirts where the bars are white…’), show reviews (‘Milli Vanilli is the most boring German punk band, ever’), zine reviews, pictures etc. etc. Also some nice ‘specials’ (for the lack of a better word) like his ode to fanzines (including my personal favorites Anti-Matter & Monkey) or the “Matrix” section where he lists the scratched messages that some bands put in the run out groove of their records. Something I did in SWNK #1 (or was it #2?) as well.
I guess it’s pretty clear by now: This is honestly one of the most fun and interesting zines I’ve read in ages. Daan is not taking himself too seriously, but at the same time he has some great content in his zine. Killer combination. I can’t wait for issue #2.
Oh and it’s always good to see someone share my love for No Warning’s Suffer, Survive.
