What exactly is going on? I can’t read French. Do I understand correctly that one of the organizers of Edge Fest appears to have have some dodgy political background?

just read the messages from Wolf Down on that thread and you’ll get it. The rest of the french posters are just outraged or wondering if it’s true.

I’m wondering how can this people think this is some kind of positive statement. This is garbage. Fuck apolitical attitudes, Fuck “straight edge only for the sake of it” attitudes.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but if I remember correctly there is nothing about being political in the original MT lyric…

The whole “you have to be political AKA left wing” thing in hardcore (at least some part of it) always struck me as strange.

I always thought hardcore was supposed to be mainly about thinking for yourself. But in fact it’s “think for yourself, but please think what the majority thinks is the right thing to think.”

I don’t care what the Minor Threat lyric say, this is not a freaking bible. To me straight edge is as much a personal choice as it is a political stance. I don’t consider myself left wing (nor right wing), and to be honest, I also found it strange when I first heard about Manliftingbanner or Refused advocating communism and straight edge altogether.

I agree with you, Straight Edge is about thinking for yourself, but that also means not being complacent with abstaining from intoxication. That’s why being Straight Edge with “nothing more, nothing less” doesn’t make sense to me.

When you say “think for yourself, but please think what the majority thinks is the right thing to think.”, this actually describes the dumb Hardcore scene to me, the ones who only care about collecting shoes and tattoos, the bands putting their flags on their shirts and singing about how they are better than everyone else.
I see Straight Edge as punk and progressive. Not mainstream and conservative.
