The Guns from Cleveland were a criminally overlooked hardcore punk band. 2012 sees their debut album finally getting an official release on Smog Veil Recs.

The Guns, Cleveland’s best kept secret was posted on Some Will Never Know - hardcore / punk zine - A zine about people and their stories. About hardcore, about punk and everything in between. About you and me.

My tip for 2012 is a band from 1983

You may already be familiar with the name Dave Araca. In fact, he is mentioned in Mike (Doghead)’s review of the recent Integrity ‘Kingdom Of Heaven’ 7″, since it was released in Dave’s memory. If you haven’t come across the name before then basically Dave was an active drummer in the Cleveland punk rock and hardcore scene from the early 80′s through to his tragic death in 1994 from an aneurysm. He played in The Dark, The Guns, Bowel, Asphalt, False Hope (bass first, then drums), Integrity, and probably more. Asphalt only finished recording their album two weeks before Araca’s untimely death.

The band we’re talking about today is one of Araca’s earliest bands, The Guns. In 1983 The Guns – an ofshoot of The Dark, and barely into their teens – recorded a truly great punk rock record that never had an official release.

A couple of earlier tracks from their 1982 demo made it onto the The New Hope compilation on New Hope Records (run by Tommy Dark of The Dark), and one from the shelved album was featured on the ‘They Pelted Us With Rocks And Garbage’ comp by Negative print zine. But these were the only ‘official’ outings.

At one point Dwid from Integrity even released the album in stealth as a bunch of extra songs tacked onto the end of the Bowel ‘Rotten Fecal Duct’ album (on which Araca also drummed) on Dark Empire Records. More recently you might have heard fellow Cleveland band Cheap Tragedies covering The Guns, or you may have heard the rumour that Grand Theft Audio were interested in putting the album out, but the trail to get this record a proper release went cold. Until now.

Smog Veil Records has announced that it is giving the album an official release in May 2012. It looks like it will be a double LP retrospective which gathers up the demo, the album, and some other odds and sods. My suggestion is that we start sending Smog Veil nagging emails around April time checking that things are still on track for the May release, and waving our money at them.

Sadly its is not just Araca who is no longer with us, vocalist from The Guns Scott Eakin died of a heart attack in 2008. A couple of years prior to Scott’s death a CD called ‘Attack’ featuring rerecorded versions of some later tracks by The Guns came out on SFE Records.

Meanwhile another band called The Guns has sprung up, from my native land of South Wales of all places. But I do not care for them, and neither should you for that matter.

In summary then, the best way to pay tribute to one of Clevelands longest kept secrets, whilst simultaneously ensuring your Summer is made better by the arrival of a double slab of teenage punk rock greatness is to order this LP as soon as Smog Veil will let you.

Jeremy Bolm of Touche Amore launches a new label called “Secret Voice”, manufactured and distributed by Deathwish.

“What is Secret Voice? It’s an excuse. It’s an excuse to release different things that I fully believe in, whether it’s a record, book, video, etc. The wonderful people at Deathwish Inc have blessed me with this opportunity. I have been lucky enough to spend most of the last few years traveling, and in my travels I have met a lot of talented people and seen a lot of fantastic bands that have influenced my decision to get this project off the ground. When we were in Europe this last Summer I made the mistake of forgetting my music and books in our van back in the states. This lead to a lot of time to think about what else I wanted to do with my life aside from Touche Amore. I’ve always dreamed of working at a label, so what’s better than starting one with your friends helping you out? Well, here goes nothing.”

The first release on Secret Voice is the self titled 7″EP from London Ontario’s Single Mothers.
“Last year TA played an off-date show in Hamilton, Ontario. That night a band opened the show called Single Mothers. They started their set as I was organizing our merch and after about 45 seconds my ears perked up and I dropped what I was doing. I watched their set in entirety with my eyes wide and a rabid feeling of excitement that I knew I was witnessing something very special. Based out of London, Ontario Canada, Single Mothers plays a style of punk/post-hardcore that is both high in energy and layered with creativity. There is a level of honesty that vocalist Andrew Thomson gives with every song and performance that is jaw dropping and hair raising. This 7” EP serves as a unforgiving confessional of late intoxicated nights and sexual deviant behavior. Imagine a hybrid of The Hold Steady and The Bronx with a grimy overtone all it’s own. All of the elements are present for Single Mothers to step out of the shadows of Ontario and be the new Canadian front runners.” – Jeremy Bolm.

Have you been getting bad looks in the moshpit lately? Feeling ‘Out of step’ maybe? Simply because your outfit wasn’t hip enough?

We know it’s crucial to stay up to date with the latest fashion in hardcore, so together with the Effenaar we might be able to solve this ‘little’ problem for you.

Since Caliban is playing the Effenaar on the 26th of February with Winds Of Plague, Eyes Set To Kill, We Butter The Bread With Butter and Attila we can giveaway a proper mosh-outfit.

The Effenaar donated 2 shirts (if it stays this cold you better wear the both of them together) and some nice mosh shorts for you. Just look below, do you see yourself moshing already? We do. You deserve this outfit. Repeat after me, “I deserve this outfit”.

All jokes aside, here’s how you can win this. It’s simple. Just put a message like this on your Twitter or Facebook:

I want that Caliban moshoutfit @swnkzine & @effenaar are giving away. 26th of February – Caliban @ Effenaar - http://www.swnk.org/wp-content/uploads/caliban-flyer.jpg

You can copy that one, or come up with your own (can be in your own language). As long as your message has the following:

- A link to the flyer
- @swnkzine (on Twitter) or @Some Will Never Know (Facebook) mentioned (otherwise we can’t monitor your submissions)

As far as we’re concerned you can also try multiple times, whatever floats your boat. We’ll pick one random winner on the 18th of February (which means you can participate until midnight on the 17th) and the Effenaar will make sure you’ll get your mosh outfit in time for the show, so you can outshine em all.

Good luck!

I will make no attempt to hide my enthusiasm regarding this record. But what can you do when you’ve been looking forward for a album to come out and that it ends up blowing away all your expectations?
Yes, I expected Unveil’s new songs to be good, but I didn’t expect them to make a really great LP altogether!

Here’s the deal, this album contains 9 songs. I was a bit doubtful at first, thinking it would be short for a long player. But in reality these 9 tracks are all different and each one of them has something special to bring to the table. In other words, 9 good songs, no filler. That’s something rare enough in a hardcore record these days.

The opening track of the record is powerful and showcases the band’s overall style of music: Heavy, inventive and clearly influenced by 90′ Hardcore. The other thing that I can’t help noticing is how great the production is. Actually it doesn’t sound too far from the Seven Generations LP. The guitars seem to have lost the metallic sound they had on their previous 7”, and that’s a good thing. “ I was forced into your culture, I abhore your culture”. The lyrics to this song somehow echoes Ian McKaye’s in Embrace’s End of Year as it deals with the partying culture. Just when you thought Unveil was all about big riffs, things get quieter by the end of the song and the guitars take a surprising turn. I wasn’t ready for those bouncing guitar notes over a crushing rhythm section.

The most radical change in sound for this band comes with the following track, “Suicidal Pathway”, and its crazy sounding, 108-esque guitars that blow in your face. This is the most groovy song on the record, with an underlying sense of melody that’s drawing for the guitars. Unveil never sounded so diverse before!

Then all of a sudden the next track, “Pathos” grabs us by the throat and violently drags us to an ugly place. The music now becomes thick and suffocating, we’re left strangled and feeling stifled by the relentless dissonant guitars and the pounding double bass (that part actually sounds like a flying helicopter!). Never before has a song about animal rights been so brutal. “Castrated and mutilated”, “pining away in their own excrement”… Christian says (or rather screams) it himself, the lyrics aren’t metaphorical, “[...]just the raw cold truth”.

Our shaking bodies are taken to a safer place for recovery, and “Head & Hearts” seems like a breath of fresh air with its slow pace and longer instrumental parts. I think this track shows how the band works on song structures. Everything is calculated and thought through; you won’t find two parts that sound exactly the same. This requires some hard work and musicianship.

“Chameleon” is one of my favorite song on this LP. It almost sounds like a “single” since it has a little bit of everything; and there’s almost a catchy edge to it. With a song like that it’s no wonder that Unveil gets compared to Unbroken so often; those metallic notes and epileptic riffs never get old. The vocals are delivered in an intense way, and I must say the German accent on the spoken parts is arguably of the most charming effect! One can find it funny that such a powerful voice comes from such a small singer.

“I did not” has the sickest mosh part I heard in a long time. Seriously, this is HARD! These sparkling guitars make me lose my mind! Again, if 108 is your jam you know what I’m talking about. The unsteady bass parts comes spicing things up a little bit. The lyrics to this song are some of my favorite as well: “Basing my beliefs on empathy and a sort of utopian justice that I admire, that is worthwhile to aspire”. Unveil shows its true colors and cut the grass under the feet of criticisms. The title of the record also comes from this song.

I noticed that Unveil’s sound got a little darker and less comfortable, there are not as many chugga-chugga parts as there used to be. Less Earth Crisis and more Deadguy if I could say. “To slowly Die of Cancer” shows the desire of the band to be as diverse as possible while still remaining in the framework of a specific genre.

The Tambourine at the beginning of “Antinomy” sets the mood for another peculiar song. As heavy as it starts, the rest of the song is mostly quieter and mid-paced. I kind of see it as the “ballad” of the record somehow with its sung lyrics and a more ambient vibe.

Unveil don’t let things go downhill, and come out swinging with “Choking on profusion”. This song is a good way to end the record. The blistering guitars and powerful drumming are here to make sure you’re still paying attention.

All in all this is quite a complex, yet coherent record. It clearly shows that the band put a lot of thought into this LP and nothing was left to chance. I wasn’t really sold on the artwork at first, but all in all it fits very well with the atmosphere of “A Flame With Nothing To Feed On”; this is everything but a conventional album cover for a vegan straight-edge band. With such a debut LP, Unveil clearly has the potential to become one of the heavyweights of European hardcore.

Tiny Engines (Tigers Jaw, Restorations, Look Mexico) is thrilled to welcome Long Island, NY’s State Lines to its family. The label will release the band’s upcoming Self-Titled EP on 7″ vinyl in April with pre-orders starting in March. This will be the follow up to State Lines’ debut full-length, Hoffman Manor, which you can listen to below or download for free here.

State Lines make quite the first impression as the first chords ring out on their sophomore release. Recorded this Winter with Sainthood Reps’ Bradley Cordaro, these four songs overflow with punk energy while playfully pulling at those pop heartstrings we all possess. But please, don’t throw State Lines up on the shelf with all the other tepid pop/punk out there these days. While State Lines have plenty of youthful spirit they bite deep with lyrical depth. Recalling the early days of Saves The Day and Brand New along with modern bands like Tigers Jaw and Joyce Manor, State Lines will most assuredly establish their own name very quickly.

You can get a sneak peak at “Win Free”, a new song performed acoustically as the guys walk the streets of Long Beach, NY. The video was edited/directed by Mark Sylvester:

Stay tuned for final artwork/tracklisting as well as upcoming song premieres.

Baltimore superpowers-violence hardcore outfit EDDIE BROCK have announced that their sophomore EP ‘Brand New Day’ will be released via A389 Recordings in March 2012.

Combining the best elements of hardcore/grindcore/powerviolence, EDDIE BROCK have been quickly making a name for themselves based on their pummeling hardcore meets powerviolence with a nod to Spider-man comics.

The band has previously released an EP on Photobooth Records as well as split EP with fellow locals LAPSE on To Live A Lie Records and followed up with sporatic shows in the northeast and southern region.

A389′s Domenic Romeo explains: ‘It’s always extra special when a band comes out of your city, and just knocks you off your feet. I’ve been super into what EDDIE BROCK has released so far, and jumped at the opportunity to release their new record’.

Vocalist Alex DeJong elaborates: ‘Dreams do come true because we are now on the same record label as a ton of our favorite bands and we just played with them all at the (A389 VIII Anniversary) Bash.’

Recorded by Kevin Bernsten at Developing Nations, ‘Brand New Day’ is five tracks of total fury that will appeal to fans of Spazz, Lack Of Interest and Magrudergrind. Look for a March 2012 release. Tour dates to be announced soon.
